Mute Skins explores the silent narratives embedded in the surfaces of our built environment, where cracks, erosion, and wear bear witness to the passage of time. Inspired by Juhani Pallasmaa’s concept of the tactile reading of surfaces, the act of tracing transforms these textures into non-verbal narratives that invite reflection on forgotten or overlooked histories. The project began in 2022 during an exchange in Israel and Palestine, where tracing significant landmarks became a way to examine shared geography and history. Its current focus is on the remnants of German WWII bunkers along Denmark’s west coast—relics of war now gradually succumbing to natural erosion. By highlighting the interplay of light, texture, and vision, the project evokes a sense of connection to history through the quiet language of surfaces.

In the publication, we are presented with the four works that comprise this iteration, alongside a comprehensive text by the artist and a series of archival, reference, and process images that inform the conceptual backbone of the project.

Annotated Pages is the title of a collection of books that feature works by artists and authors framed in a constellation of references and insights into process and result. Much like annotations illuminate and expand the meaning of a text, this collection will allow artists and authors to ‘annotate’ their own projects, sharing insights that enrich the reader’s understanding of their work.
